THANKSGIVING IN THE US

Jeudi 29 novembre 2007
IN the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated  on the 4th Thursday of  November. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. The celebration was based on harvest traditions that the colonists brought with them from England. In 1863, Thanksgiving as a national holiday.  Many American families get together to watch football. However, beyond food and football, Thanksgiving is also about friendship and partnership. Pilgrims and Native Americans, who were once enemies, reaped a successful harvest by working together. At the first Thanksgiving, they ate, sang, and danced together for three days. The modern Thanksgiving Day celebrations celebrate nearly the same spirit what with people of different cultures coming to reside in the country and the modern emphasis on national and multicultural integrity and harmony.

In 1621,  the first year in America  was hard but the Pilgrim's  first autumn  harvest  was  very  plentiful.
They were at peace with the Native American Indians. Their Governor, William Bradford, proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and the colonists shared food with the Indians.

During the American Revolution (late 1770's) the Congress suggested a day of national thanksgiving. In 1817 New York State adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom.  In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of each November).
